On this week’s Triathlon Training Explained Show we’re at the Porsche Experience Center looking at perspiration testing and sweat composition. This specific testing allows athletes to plan optimal hydration for racing in different conditions.

At the Silverstone Human Performance Center, Mark and Heather are put through their paces in a 42-degree heat chamber! They each ran for 22 minutes in order to calculate their hourly sweat rates. Another test was conducted to analyse their sodium levels with Mark’s levels being considerably higher than Heather’s, meaning he may be more susceptible to cramping. The testing highlights the importance of personal hydration plans, with products working for some athletes that may not suit others.

Is measuring weight before and after exercise really an accurate in measuring sweat rate? When exercising you also use energy, whether it be from glycogen or from fat stores. Would sitting in a sauna for say 20 minutes be a more accurate way of measuring sweat rate?

Had the PH sweat test done and have to say it was the biggest game changer for me. Advised on the 1500 for my sweat and put it bluntly it changed my training and racing.

and the cost of this test is ?

Very interesting, thank you.

Great video! I always used to have a headache after a long (over 1.5hr) run an occasionally a massive cramp attack. No big surprise that I lose quite a bit of salt as I can dust the salt from my shoulders after these runs. Since then I add some electrolytes in my water bottle and take some extra before and after every intense workout. Feels much better not having a headache every weekend!

Does the results differ depending on the salt consumed just prior to the test ??

Hmmm…. seems like there is a crucial aspect of your explanation of sweat rates and make up. And that point is the efficiency of the kidney which can vary based on use of NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatories.

love your videos !!! very informative. Thank you

Hey Heather and Mark. Watching this a little late. After cramping on the hills at IMLOU last year, I decided to investigate my electrolyte losses. I ended up doing a Sweat Test with Levelen here in the States. My sweat rate was similar to Mark’s, but sodium loss comparable to Heather’s. I’m loading up pre-race, and maintaining during the efforts. No more cramps and better performance!
