Beginner Triathlete Race Swim Strategy

These few tips will help beginner triathletes know how to approach the swim and stay calm while being as fast as they can be in any race distance whether it be sprint distance triathlons, olympic, half-ironman 70.3 or full ironman triathlons. Hey TAREN please make a BIKE aid station video of some sort for some of us Trainiacs that have to decide between grabbing water, sports drink or almost crashing. Or like me that never had passed through a bike aid station. Please man some advice!

Do you have any advice with regards to running in the heat ? I mean, not the acclimatization stuff. Last tuesday it was 35°C at 6pm, My heart rate was way too high compared to cooler temperature, and I called it quit after 6k cause I could feel I couldn’t keep cool enough even though I was running 30s/km slower than my half marathon PB (done at roughly 2-3°C). I think I’m not really made for these temperatures, but the half marathon I’m running in less than two months starts at 2:30pm and for the past 2 years it’s been hot on this day. I’m thinking it’s not even serious to have the race start when it’s hottest in the day. I think I will give this race one last chance, but then move on to races that start in the cool of the morning (I’m running a 20k one month before that starts in the morning).

had my first Sprint last sunday. Definitely stayed away from the main pack of the swimmers. Cant wait for my next one!

I did the Swim strategy for weak swimmers described here in my last race and screwed myself. It’s good to know how you stack up against the others, you may think you’re a poor swimmer, but you may be better than the others around you. If you’re a moderately good swimmer, get up there with the front guys, if people end up stuck behind you, too bad for them. The worst thing that can happen is getting stuck behind slower swimmers than you, lots of treading water, some flipping onto back etc.It’s not your problem that people get stuck behind you.

Thanks Taren for all your info. I’m doing my first sprint on the 24th of sept. And my freestyle stinks…. You’re giving me plenty of advise and going to the YMCA I take that info with me. I’ve got 2.5 weeks to work this out and I’m persistent, I’ve got to get the breathing down. I’m starting out the same way you did but I’m trying…..Once I do the pool swim during the event, get out of my way….
